This is a one-year fellowship opportunity supporting the work of an outstanding doctoral candidate or post-doctoral fellow in the pursuit of excellence in community/school engagement, collaboration, and outreach to underserved populations. This fellowship honors the life, work, and legacy of Dr. Maricela Gonzales, a community and school psychologist from Uvalde, Texas. Dr. Gonzales completed her undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin and her doctorate from Texas A&M University in School Psychology. Upon completion of her degree, she and her family relocated to her beloved hometown where she was for many years the only practicing psychologist in the community. Dr. Gonzales embodied the capacity of psychologists to foster collaboration and engagement between school and community agencies for the betterment of children and families. A devoted wife and mother, she worked tirelessly to support the broader geographic area in delivering and accessing mental health services. Despite her battle with cancer, she continued to work in as much capacity as she could, for as long as she could. This fellowship seeks to honor this loving, compassionate, collaborative, community servant by funding the development of future psychologists seeking to serve the underserved populations in Texas. Texas Psychology & Assessment Center is proud to honor Dr. Maricela Gonzales, school and community psychologist (1974 – 2023), with this yearly award.
